Thomas Müller returned to Portland after 12 years, with the last time the Der Raumdeuter stepped foot in the city coming during the MLS All Star match with Bayern München. It added another layer to a Cascadia Rivalry Cup match that already carried weight early in the season.
Vancouver came into the match in strong form following the end of the 2025 season, and it showed from the start. The Timbers, coming off an away loss in Colorado, were looking to respond, but it quickly turned into a difficult night at Providence Park.
Brian White opened the scoring in the 21st minute in front of the Timbers Army, giving Vancouver an early 1-0 lead. From there, the Whitecaps controlled much of the first half, limiting Portland’s chances and staying organized defensively as the Timbers searched for a way back into the game.
The second half only extended Vancouver’s control. In the 49th minute, Sebastian Berhalter delivered a set piece that found Tristan Blackmon, who doubled the lead. Berhalter then added a goal of his own in the 63rd minute, making it 3-0 and putting the match firmly out of reach.
One of the positives for Portland came through the debut of academy player Eric Izoita, who scored a standout goal in the 72nd minute. It was a moment that brought some life back into the stadium, even as the result was slipping away.
Vancouver continued to push, and Brian White added his second goal of the night in the 87th minute to make it 4-1. It capped off a dominant performance from the visitors and a difficult night for Portland.
The Timbers now head on the road to face Houston, looking to regroup after back-to-back losses to start the MLS season.
